Basement apartment lighting that feels like daylight

The brightest light you can buy for a basement apartment is a ceiling light rated in the tens of thousands of lumens. A bright torchiere floor lamp gives about 2,000 lumens, the brightest floor lamps reach 17,000 to 60,000, and Sunday Light, the artificial skylight we make, gives 34,500 lumens from the ceiling. To feel like daytime, the light also has to come from above and change colour through the day, the way the sky does.

Lumens, lux and why a basement feels dark

Lumens measure the total light a source gives out. Lux measures how much of it lands on a surface: one lumen per square metre. Foot-candles are the same idea per square foot, and one foot-candle is about 10.8 lux. A light therapy box sold as "10,000 lux" typically gives out about 1,000 lumens, and reaches 10,000 lux only 4-16 in from your face.

Most homes sit at 100-300 lux. A well-lit office is about 500 lux, or 46 foot-candles. Outdoors is 50 to 100 times brighter than a typical room, and that light comes from the whole sky. A basement apartment with a window well or a light shaft sees almost none of that sky, so it spends the day at lamp levels.

The brightest lights you can buy

Option Light output Price (October 2026) Where the light comes from
Brightech Sky torchiere 2,190 lumens, 3000K $109 Bounced off the ceiling from a 63 in pole
SANSI 40 W A21 bulb 6,000 lumens $39.99 A bare bulb in an open fixture
Honeywell 06E Max floor lamp 17,000 lumens, 4000K $899.99 (pre-order) Mostly bounced off the ceiling from a 77 in pole
Brighter 2,500-60,000 lumens, 2200-6500K $1,199 A 6 ft 3 in pole lamp standing in the room
Sunday Light 34,500 lumens, 2650-6000K $6,900 The ceiling, as an artificial skylight

Torchieres are the right first buy. Aiming light at a white ceiling spreads it across the room instead of making one hot spot. Two of Brightech's Sky torchieres in opposite corners give about 4,400 lumens for around $220.

The SANSI A21 is the cheapest route to more lumens: 6,000 for $39.99, in 3000K or 5000K. It draws a full 40 W, SANSI recommends a ventilated, unsealed fixture, and it is rated CRI 80+, against 95 and above for the brightest lamps below.

Honeywell's 06E Max is the brightest conventional floor lamp we found: 17,000 lumens, 14,500 of them aimed up, at CRI 98 and a fixed 4000K. Brighter makes the brightest lamp we know of, dimmable from 2,500 to 60,000 lumens and tunable from 2200K to 6500K. Both are floor lamps, so the bright source stands in the room on a pole at about head height.

What makes a basement feel like daytime

Brightness is half of it. The rest is where the light comes from and what colour it is. Daylight arrives from a large area of sky above you, so the room is lit evenly and nothing glares. It stays cool and bluish through the day and turns warm towards sunset. A floor lamp can put out as many lumens, but from one point in the room, so the space is bright near it and dimmer away from it.

Sunday is built to behave like sky. The LED sits at the bottom of the arm and shines up at a sheet 47 in across. The sheet scatters the bluer light and reflects the warmer light. The physics is Rayleigh scattering, which is also what turns the sky blue. You look up and see a blue glow with a warm, sun-like centre, and the room gets soft, indirect light with no glare point.

Sitting under it you get 5,000 lux and more, reaching 10,000 lux at 24 in (60 cm) from the sheet, with a CRI of 97+. Set a schedule once in the app and it runs cool 6000K in the morning, then warmer and dimmer through the afternoon, and we recommend having it off by around 6pm. Water runs through the tubes in the arm to cool the LED, which is how it holds this brightness all day.

Will it fit in a basement apartment?

Sunday needs a ceiling of 7 ft 10 in (240 cm) or more. For ceilings from 7 ft 10 in to about 9 ft 2 in, a reduced-height mount holds the disc 4.3 in below the ceiling. Under about 8 ft 6 in, hang it over a table or desk rather than where people walk.

It hangs like a chandelier, and any qualified electrician can fit it in 1-2 hours. Nothing is recessed, so a concrete ceiling is no obstacle, and if the room has no ceiling light point it can be powered by a cable run to a wall socket. It runs on US mains with no transformer and weighs 49 lb.

In New York we install it for $450, and you can see one in New York by appointment through our contact page. Sunday Light, our indoor sunlight fixture, is $6,900 in the US, £5,900 in the UK and €6,900 in Europe, with free worldwide delivery, duties and taxes included, and it ships within 5 working days. Specifications are on the sunlight ceiling light page. How many lumens a room needs works through the numbers for your floor area, and daylight in a room with no windows covers lighting schedules for rooms with no window at all.
