High-CRI ceiling lights: what CRI 95+ gets you

For a very bright living room at CRI 95 or better, your options are high-CRI bulbs in a multi-bulb fitting, high-CRI downlights or panels, Govee's 7,000-lumen Sky Ceiling Light, and Sunday Light, an artificial skylight that gives 34,500 lumens at CRI 97+ from one fitting. Most ceiling lights sold for homes are CRI 80-90 and give about 1,500 lumens.

High CRI is easy to find in a bulb. High CRI and a lot of light from the ceiling is rare.

What CRI measures

CRI, the colour rendering index, compares how test colours look under a light with how they look under a reference light of the same colour temperature. The headline figure, Ra, is the average score for eight moderately saturated colours, R1 to R8, out of 100. The method is set by the CIE (13.3), which also defines six extra colours outside that average, including a strong red, a skin tone and a leaf green.

The legal floor in Europe is CRI 80: EU ecodesign rules allow lower only for specialist uses such as industrial lighting. Most home fittings sit at 80-90. Westinghouse's 9-inch flush ceiling light is CRI 80 at 1,450 lumens; Bulbrite's is CRI 90 at 1,400.

Why R9 matters as much as the headline number

R9 is the score for saturated red, and it isn't part of Ra. A light can quote a respectable CRI and still render red badly: Waveform Lighting measured one LED at Ra 79 with an R9 of -1.4. Standard white LEDs are short of red, and Yuji, which makes high-CRI LEDs, says R9 is "typically very low" in them.

Red matters in a living room because skin, wood and textiles carry a lot of it. Waveform's point is blunt: a light that lacks red makes a person look pale, or even green. Good high-CRI products publish R9. Waveform's CENTRIC HOME bulb is CRI 95+ with R9 80+, and Yuji's BC-series LEDs are CRI 95 minimum (97 typical) with R9 of at least 90.

A newer method, IES TM-30, scores 99 colour samples instead of eight and gives two numbers: Rf for how faithful colours look, and Rg for how saturated, according to the US Department of Energy. If a product lists TM-30, Rf is the figure to compare with CRI.

What CRI 95+ changes in a living room

Moving from CRI 80 to 95+ mostly changes the colours the eight-sample average under-weights: deep reds, skin tones and warm wood. In a living room that covers faces, timber, rugs and food, which is most of what you look at. Colour temperature is a separate choice. Warm white (2700-3000K) suits evenings, and cooler light, 4000K and up, reads as daytime.

High CRI on its own won't make a room feel like daylight. That also takes a lot of light, arriving from a large area overhead. A living room lit to daylight levels needs tens of thousands of lumens, which how many lumens a room needs works through, and the look of a sky is covered in what makes an artificial skylight look like real sky.

Your options for a bright, high-CRI living room

Option Light output CRI (R9) What to know
Waveform CENTRIC HOME A21 bulb 1,600 lm each 95+ (R9 80+) 2700K or 3000K; not dimmable
Soho Lighting FXD102 downlight 460-600 lm each 95-97 Recessed, 70 mm cut-out; dimmable
Waveform CENTRIC DAYLIGHT panel, 2 x 2 ft 4,000 lm 95 (R9 90) Hard-wired; 4000K, 5000K or 6500K
Govee Sky Ceiling Light 7,000 lm 95 at 2700K 21 in, sky-effect ceiling light
Sunday Light 34,500 lm 97+ Artificial skylight, 2650-6000K on a schedule

Bulbs are the simplest route. Waveform's A21 bulb is $39, so three in a three-arm fitting give 4,800 lumens at CRI 95+ for about $117. They aren't dimmable and aren't rated for enclosed fittings, so choose an open shade.

Downlights spread the light evenly but mean cutting holes. Soho Lighting's FXD102 is CRI 97 at 3000K (460 lumens) and CRI 96 at 4000K (600 lumens), so a living room needs eight or more.

Panels give more high-CRI light per fitting than bulbs or downlights. Waveform's 2 x 2 ft panel is 4,000 lumens at CRI 95 with R9 90, $180, and has the look of an office ceiling. LED Panel Store's 600 x 600 mm panel is CRI 95+ at 4,000 lumens, in 5000K only.

Govee's Sky Ceiling Light is the brightest high-CRI ceiling light we found from another maker: 7,000 lumens, CRI 95 measured at 2700K, with a sky-effect face.

Where Sunday Light fits

Sunday Light gives 34,500 lumens at CRI 97+, nearly five times Govee's output and over twenty times a typical flush ceiling light, from one fitting. The LED sits at the bottom of the arm and shines up at a sheet 120 cm across. The sheet scatters the bluer light and reflects the warmer light, the same Rayleigh scattering that makes the sky blue, so you see a sky glow with a warm centre and the room gets soft, indirect light.

Set a schedule once and it runs cool 6000K daylight in the morning, then warmer and dimmer through the afternoon, down to 2650K and 1%. It's flicker-free and gives visible light only, with no UV. Water flows through the arm's tubes to cool the LED, which is what lets it hold that output all day. It hangs like a chandelier from a ceiling rose, and any qualified electrician can fit it in 1-2 hours with no cutting into the ceiling.

Sunday Light, our indoor sunlight fixture, is £5,900 in the UK, $6,900 in the US and €6,900 in Europe, with free worldwide delivery. You can see one by appointment in London, New York, Palo Alto and Zurich through our contact page, and the sunlight ceiling light page has the full specifications.
